What is Asphalt Milling?

Asphalt milling is an affordable solution for asphalt pavement restoration. Milling is the process of removing the top layer of asphalt without disturbing the underlying subbase in order to allow new asphalt to be laid down. This process can save both time and money if the subbase does not need to be fixed.

Asphalt Milling vs. Traditional Gravel

Asphalt millings come from recycled asphalt pavement that has been crushed into very fine gravel.Unlike traditional gravel, which must come from a stone yard, millings cost considerably less due to their recycled nature. Choosing recycled asphalt allows you to save money while being environment-friendly which is why it is often used as an alternative to complete demolition and repaving. No new materials are used in the creation and nothing needs to be transported. The process involves grinding up an asphalt surface (anywhere from a couple of inches to a full-depth removal) to provide a smooth and even surface for repaving.

Benefits of Asphalt Milling:

Restores pavement to a uniform cross-section and longitudinal profile

Restores drainage flow

Restores curb-reveal for roadways and parking areas that have had numerous overlays

Removes the ruts and smooth the wash boarding

Provides texture for an improved bond to the new pavement

Restores the desired profile and cross section

Allows for a uniform pavement match from curb and gutter

Generates no smoke or flame and the small amount of dust is easily controlled

Can be re-used multiple times in other road resurfacing and rehabilitation

Reduced cost compared to other procedures
